Modeling System for Management of Surface Water Functional Regions

Abstract: Water pollution has drawn increasing attention with the development of economy and society in China. In order to protect the water quality and the aquatic ecosystem, national water resources protection plan was carried out. As an important part of the plan, the surface water function regionalization was developed in national wide. Water functional region is the basic unit of effective protection, utilization and management of water resources. Environmental information system (EIS) provides a helpful tool for the management of water functional regions. As a vital basis of the EIS, water quality models can facilitate the analysis of pollution discharge, water environmental capacity and pollution control. Small reservoir (lake), narrow river and wide river are three major types of water bodies for which different water quality models should be adopted respectively. Box mixed model was applied to small reservoirs and lakes. One-dimensional steady model was introduced to simulate cross section uniform rivers (narrow rivers). A formula based on 2-D water quality model was proposed for the analysis of shallow-broad rivers (wide rivers) . Then an integrated modeling system was implemented integrating the water functional regions database, water quality models and Geographical Information System (GIS). Three application modes of simulation and forecast were designed in the modeling system to facilitate the management and decision-making of water environment. This study focuses on exploring how water environment modeling can be applied to research the water functional regions in the context of effective water resources management.
